I’ve been working with Simply Dewey for several years now and the guy just keeps making brilliant music. ‘Before We Grew Up’, released on 21 September, is the latest track I’ve mastered for him, and a very good excuse for me to tell you to go and listen to him.
Dwain Duff, to give him his real name, is a remarkably gifted producer. His music has a lo-fi aesthetic, but there’s a level of detail and complexity in his tracks that I rarely hear elsewhere in the genre. What I particularly love though is his ear for melody and the chord progressions underneath it all. I’m always a sucker for a beautiful harmonic progression, and Dwain’s music is full of them. That’s something that really separates him from a lot of his EDM peers, and it’s why I’m always keen to hear what he’s been working on. He’s prolific too, which makes the consistency of it all even more impressive.
‘Before We Grew Up’ came out on his twentieth birthday, and is about that odd mixture of looking forward to adult life and wishing you could have a bit of your childhood back. He’s revisited some of the plucky sounds from his earlier tracks ‘Thinkin’ of U’ and ‘Jaded’, and the song also features on his new What Remains EP which is an absolute banger of a record. Only just turning twenty and already having this much good music behind you is fairly outrageous, frankly. (Yes, I am jealous.)
It’s been brilliant watching his following grow and grow, with his music reaching people all over the world and clocking up over a million streams on Spotify alone. I’m delighted to see him doing so well, but I can’t say I’m particularly surprised. He’s consistently brilliant, and he deserves every single one of those plays.
Go and give ‘Before We Grew Up’ a listen, then dig into the rest of his music. Let’s go get him a few more million streams.
