Blue Ingot Releases Six Singles

Blue Ingot has released a run of tracks recently, each one taking a slightly different scenic route through a world of classic sounds dragged, very much willingly, into the modern day.

The one that’ll be popping up in my Reel is I’m Alone Again, which also happens to be my favourite of the bunch so far. “What do you mean 'so far', Mick? There couldn’t possibly be more on the way, could there?!” No comment.

It’s a totally a cappella track with a slick barbershop-style aesthetic, but this is definitely not some dusty old throwback. The production pulls it right into the modern day. Think doo-wop on an e-bike, filming a reel for TikTok, while somehow still making time for a crazy tight four-part harmony. Ridiculous? Yes. Accurate? Also yes.

That kind of thing runs right through Blue Ingot’s work. Whether it’s the nu-metal-inspired Bachelor, the hair-rock swagger of My Senorita, or the fantastic Pink Floyd-like soft prog of Paradise, there’s a real knack here for taking classic sounds and giving them a very modern prod in the ribs.

And underneath all the stylistic shape-shifting, the songs are just really, really good. The writing is clever, the production is polished, and the lyrics are often genuinely funny in that lovely “hang on, did he just say that?” kind of way. It’s playful and self-aware, but there’s proper craft underneath it all, which is always the bit that matters.

Blue Ingot’s own bio describes the project as “a modern indie alter ego, shifting between moods, styles and perspectives,” built on “real songwriting and polished production,” and that pretty much nails it. The music jumps between worlds, but it always feels like there’s a clear personality holding it all together.

I’m Alone Again is a brilliant example of that. It nods to the past, sounds completely fresh, and manages to be impressive without ever losing its sense of fun.
