Mastering “The Family Album” By Chillin’
Chillin', an acoustic trio made up of Shaz, Kaz and Sox, have today released The Family Album, which I was fortunate enough to master.
This was a project where the heart of it was very clear from the first listen. The album is dedicated to their children and grandchildren, and that sentiment really comes through in the songs. There’s a warmth to the whole record; it's personal and very family-focused, in a very genuine way.
Chillin’ describe themselves as an acoustic trio with an original sound, blending vocals, harmonies, guitars, keyboard and percussion. That nails it, but we can't fail to also mention the quality of the songwriting. These are songs built around real stories, melodies and performances, which is always a lovely thing to work with from a mastering point of view.
The album moves through a mix of styles, including ballads, country, pop and some rock influences, but it still feels very much like one body of work. Acoustic guitars, pianos and vocal harmonies sit at the centre of it, with the arrangements supporting the songs rather than getting in the way of them.
From a mastering perspective, I wanted to keep the album sounding natural, warm and cohesive across the full tracklist. With music like this, it’s not about pushing everything as loud or hyped as possible. It’s about helping the songs translate well, keeping the emotional detail intact, and making sure the album feels consistent from beginning to end.
There’s a wonderful nostalgic quality to The Family Album. It feels like a collection of songs made for the right reasons, by people who care deeply about the stories they’re telling and the people they’re writing for.
It was such a pleasure to be involved in the final stage of the process and help bring the album together for release.
